How to Breed a Black and Silver Mini Schnauzer

How to Breed a Black and Silver Mini Schnauzer thumbnail
Breeding a miniature schnauzer takes some research but can reap rewarding results.

The American Kennel Club classifies the miniature schnauzer as part of the terrier group. Miniature schnauzers come in three recognized colors: salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black. In order to be classified as a miniature, the schnauzer must stand between 12 and 14 inches tall. The silver and black coat pattern is defined as following the same pattern as the salt and pepper; however, the entire salt and pepper section must be black. Because these little dogs are smart and affectionate, many owners decide to breed them to carry on the line.

Instructions

    • 1

Select appropriate breeding stock and make sure that your female miniature schnauzer is ready and appropriate for breeding. A female dog should be at least 1.5 years of age before her first breeding. Using a purebred, black and silver miniature schnauzer ensures the creation of quality offspring.

    • 2

Take your miniature schnauzer to the vet to have a prebreeding checkup. In order to ensure the health of both your dog and her pups, she must be up to date on all vaccines prior to breeding and should be checked for general health and the ability to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Continuing veterinary care throughout breeding, pregnancy and whelping is imperative for the health of your bitch and her pups.

Select an appropriate stud to breed to and watch for signs that your female dog is in heat. Signs of heat start with a clear type of discharge from her vagina, which will turn darker as she moves farther into heat. Optimal breeding time is 10 to 14 days into color discharge. Your bitch is ready to breed when she starts flagging; she will raise her tail and move it to the side. When this occurs, take your dog to the stud for breeding.

Put the dogs together for 20 to 40 minutes at a time for breeding to occur. Take your dog home and prepare for her pregnancy.

Tips & Warnings

  • During the pregnancy your dog must receive regular veterinary care.

  • Miniature schnauzers give birth around 60 days after they've been bred.

  • Make sure you have blankets, cleaning supplies and a whelping box available before your miniature schnauzer goes into labor.

  • Dogs can have miscarriages and difficulty during whelping can occur. Puppies might not survive the process.
