You can record television on most computers, including a Mac, as long as you have a TV tuner card installed. Macs don't come with this feature provided, however you can add one one without much trouble. Once connected to a television source, you can not only record the content, but turn on and record the closed captioning if you want to read the dialog in future viewings.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the Mac compatible TV tuner card to your Mac computer. The tuner card can be purchased at most electronic and computer stores. Make sure the device states it is Mac compatible on the packaging. If it doesn't it won't function properly on your computer. A TV tuner card can connect to your computer via USB cable.

    • 2

Insert the driver installation CD--the driver installation wizard will open. Wait for the brief series of prompts to complete the driver setup. Once complete, remove the driver installation CD and insert the software installation CD into the computer. Click "Next," then accept the license agreement. Follow the remainder of the prompts to complete the software installation.

    • 3

Plug a coaxial cable (an electrical conducting cable found at any electronics store) into the "Out" port of either the cable or satellite receiver you are using to obtain your programming. Connect the other end of the cable to the "In" port on the TV tuner.

    • 4

Power on the receiver and launch the software you installed onto your Mac. You can see the cable/satellite programming on the computer screen.

    • 5

Click the "Options" tab in the program and select "Closed Captioning." The captioning appears on the screen. Adjust the station on your receiver to the channel you want to record.

    • 6

Click the "Record" button on the computer. The computer begins to record the television programming with the closed captioning. When you want the recording to stop, click the record button again.
