Civil service jobs are appealing for a number of reasons. They provide a career, job security, mobility and potentially adventure. You can work at the federal, state or local government levels. According to Federaljobs.net, the federal government is the largest employer in the nation with 2.7 million positions in 2010. However, tests for civil service positions can be difficult. In some cases, there are several exams, which, if passed, lead to an interview and a final evaluation that considers your application and background.

Determine where and when the exams are offered via PSE-Net.com. Plan ahead of time as civil service exams are only offered periodically, sometimes only every two years. Be aware that there are different skills and levels of expertise required.

Hello. Thanks for the comments. I added the information about where to find the study guide and job bulletin. In terms of the other points I have to respectfully disagree. I think that it is important to see the civil service exam as a three stage process that includes the interviewing process and the evaluation as well as the exam. The point of taking the exam is to be offered a job position at end.
