An apple jelly cocktail is an old drink, believed to have been invented around 1900 according to Harry Craddock, author of "The Savoy Cocktail Book." Craddock's book has since become required reading for bartenders and the recipe provided here is almost exactly the same as his, though it has been updated to suit the tastes of more modern drinkers. Things You'll Need

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Crushed ice
  • Juice of ¼ lemon
  • 3 oz. gin
  • 1 tsp. apple jelly
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Chilled martini glass
  • Apple slice, for garnish

      Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with crushed ice.

      Add the lemon juice, gin and apple jelly to the cocktail shaker.

      Cover the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds.

      Using a fine-mesh strainer, strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into a chilled martini glass.

      Garnish the drink with a fresh apple slice and serve right away.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try adding 2 tbsp. of apple brandy to this recipe for an extra kick.

  • If you want to add more natural fruit flavor to this drink, you can add 1/2 oz. of unfiltered apple juice to the cocktail shaker before mixing. Unfiltered apple juice works better than filtered apple juice when mixed with alcohol.
