How Can I Tell If My Baby Bearded Dragon Is Male or Female?

Bearded dragons are common pets among reptile lovers. When making one a pet and attempting to name it, people often wonder whether it is male or female. Thus the need, or curiosity, to sex the bearded dragon arises. This is a simple way to determine the gender of a bearded dragon.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your bearded dragon in one hand and hold it perpendicular to your fingers. The dragon's head should face away from you. Place your thumb on its back to hold in place.

    • 2

With your other hand lift the bearded dragon's tail up 90 degrees.

    • 3

Look for the vent just above the base of the tail. If you see two bulges, it's male. If you see a single, centered bulge, it's female.

    • 4

If you don't see any bulges at all, wait until the dragon reaches 7 to 8 inches in length and try again.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to be sure, take your bearded dragon to a veterinarian experienced with reptiles for sexing.
