How to Know If the Power Steering Fluid Is Low

Most new vehicles come with power steering systems.

Power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid that is necessary for the power steering system in your vehicle to function properly. The fluid helps power the steering system in the vehicle, and it also aids in protecting the moving parts in the steering system. Because these functions are so important to your vehicle, you should make sure your power steering fluid is never low.

Instructions

1. Drive your vehicle and make a few turns. If it's difficult to move the steering wheel, your power steering fluid is most likely low.

2. Pay attention while driving even if you're not making turns. If the steering fluid is low, your wheel may suddenly jerk while the engine is running.

3. Listen while you drive your vehicle. A low groaning, grinding or squealing noise, especially while turning the wheel at low speeds, is an indication of low power steering fluid.

4. Remove the cap on the power steering fluid reservoir. Use the dipstick inside to check the fluid level. There will be lines on the dipstick that indicate whether or not the fluid levels are too low.

• If you need to replace your power steering fluid often, take your car to a mechanic. A leak is the most common problem associated with low power steering fluid.
