How to Use a Pool Sand Filter & Pump
The pool sand filter works with the pump to clean the water of debris. As the water is filtered in the sand, dirt particles are trapped in the sand before the water is returned to the pool. Using the sand filter correctly and cleaning the sand and pump the proper way will extend the useful life of the sand. Does this Spark an idea?

Run the pump in the filter position so that the pool water is being filtered at least two times a day for at least two to three hours at a time. All pumps have timers that can be set so that the filtering process in automatic. Each pump system has a different way of setting up the timer. Refer to the pump manual or the manufacturer for specifications on how to set the timer up.

Backwash the sand filters once a week, every two weeks or once a month. The length of time between backwashing cycles will depend on how much the pool is used. Another reason you would backwash a sand filter is if you have too much rainwater in the pool. If the water is over the skimmer basket top lip, use the backwash function to drain some water from the pool. Backwashing takes water from the pool and runs it through the sand to filter out the dirt and out the outlet valve where the backwash hose is connected.

Turn off the pump to start the backwashing process. Turn the multiport valve to backwash. Turn the pump on and run until the water in the sight glass runs clean. Turn the pump off. Turn the valve to rinse. Turn on the pump and run until the water in the sight glass runs clear. Turn the pump off. Turn the valve to filter. Turn the pump on.
