How to Create Your Own Smart Board

The Smart Board is an interactive presentation system that consists of a computer with Smart Board software, projector, and a free-standing or wall-mounted projection board. When you "draw" on the computer with a Smart Pen, your markings are displayed on the screen. This replaces an old-fashioned pointer or stick, and adds a layer of interactivity to your presentations. If your school or college doesn't have the budget for a Smart Board for your classroom, it's possible to add a similar level of interactivity with a couple of classroom accessories and a dose of ingenuity.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with digital projector
  • White board
  • Overhead projector

Instructions

    • 1

Project your presentation onto the white board using a standard digital projector. For example, if you want students to see Google Earth in action, display Google Earth on the white board.

    • 2

Place the transparency onto the overhead projector.

    • 3

Turn the overhead projector on, and aim the image at the same area where the first image (in this example, the Google Earth image) is displayed on the white board. Make sure to cover the same amount of area on the board with both projection devices.

    • 4

Mimic the Smart Pen by drawing on the transparency sheet with the markers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep plenty of spare transparencies handy so that you can quickly "erase" your markings by replacing the transparency sheet.

  • If you don't have a white board, any surface onto which you usually project an image, such as a wall, will do.
