How to Mount Grab Bars
Grab bars are handles used to provide assistance and stability. Typically constructed of metal or heavy plastic, grab bars are often located near bathtubs and showers. Individuals who are older, are injured or have a disability may benefit from the assistance a grab bar can provide. Installing grab bars requires only a few tools and may be successfully completed by most home owners in a short amount of time. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Grab bar
- Wall stud sensor
- Drill and bit (wood and masonry)
- Wall anchor
- Mounting screws
- Screwdriver
- Masking tape
- Silicon caulk

Take the grab bar out of its packaging. Refer to the enclosed packing list and make sure all the parts are accounted for. Contact the manufacturer if replacement parts are needed.

Locate a mounting position near a tub, shower or other area. Use a stud finder to locate a 2 by 4 wall stud to which the bar may be attached.

Position the grab bar on the wall so that the mounting holes are positioned over the 2 by 4 wall stud. Mark the position of the mounting holes using a pencil.

Drill a hole using a bit that is slightly smaller than the included screws. Drill through the wall and partially into the stud. Drill a hole for each marked mounting point.

Place the grab bar on the wall so that the mounting holes line up with the drilled holes. Insert and tighten a screw into each hole with a screwdriver. Place any mounting hole covers over the grab handles and slightly pull on the bar to make sure it is securely attached.

Tips & Warnings
Insert dry wall anchors into any holes that are not over a 2 by 4 stud. Tighten the screws into the anchors with a screwdriver.
Mounting the grab bar in the shower stall may require masking the drill point with tape to prevent chipping and using a masonry drill bit. Make sure to seal the hole with silicon caulk to prevent leaks around the drill points.
