The first reaction to a burn mark on your countertop is often to try to wipe if off. This does not work. The second is to consider hiding it with paint. Your chances here are not very good, either, especially if there is a pattern on your counter's surface. Fortunately, there are a series of steps that will usually fix the problem before resorting to more drastic measures such as cutting out a piece of your countertop. Although there are many different kinds of countertops, laminate ones are among the most common.
Step 1
Wipe off your countertop with a mild dish soap detergent and a damp cloth.

Apply some white toothpaste on the burn marks. Let the toothpaste seep into the marks for 10 minutes. Scrub the burn marks with a scrub brush or tooth brush.
Step 3
Wipe your counter with a cloth and water.
Step 4
Sprinkle a strong powdered cleanser on the burn marks if they are still there. Scrub the marks with a damp cloth or scouring pad.
Step 5
Remove as much of the laminate material as possible with a screwdriver if the burn marks have still not gone away. Take care to avoid gouging the countertop.
Step 6
Sand over the burnt area with a hand sander and a fine-grit sandpaper. Sand until the area is nice and smooth.
Step 7
Fill in any missing or gouged areas with laminate repair paste. Wipe up any excess putty on the rest of the countertop with a rag. Allow the putty to dry and then sand your countertop again.
Step 8
Wipe off your countertop with water and a sponge to remove any residue from the sanding. Allow the countertop to dry completely.
Step 9
Apply a coat of melamine paint with a paint roller. Melamine paint, which you can find at paint stores, is basically a liquid plastic used to paint over plastic surfaces.
Step 10
Allow the first coat of melamine paint to dry and apply a new one, if necessary.
Step 11
Wash down your countertop with rubbing alcohol and leave your counter alone for a few hours.
