Since color and texture are what embroidery is all about, you'll want to select your materials carefully. Your pattern may specify colors and materials to use. If not, you have a chance to exhibit your personal artistic flair when planning your design.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Embroidery Yarns
  • Sewing Box
  • Threads
  • Embroidery Scissors
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Fabrics
  • Embroidery Threads
  • Embroidery Patterns
  • Embroidery Needles
  • Embroidery Hoops
  1. Step 1

Select a color scheme. You may want to use different hues of the same color, similar colors or complementary colors to create special effects.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you need thread or yarn. Crewel embroidery is stitched with yarn. The most commonly used thread is six-strand embroidery floss. The strands can be separated to work fine lines.

  3. Step 3

Make a list of colors required and carry it with you to the crafts store. Check off each color of thread as you find and purchase it.

  4. Step 4

Store all colors required for a specific project together with other related materials.

on 11/22/2005 Web color charts are not exact, but they're a good guide to keep at hand. There are a lot to choose from. One of the best I found is the WEB ETCharts service, at PlanetEmbroidery.com. With a simple interface, you can search for a color code, RGB value, pantone, or thread code and get exact and closest matches between different thread manufacturers. Then you can print for further reference before buying. The color may drastically vary between the cards, the monitor and the printer. The service is located here: http://www.planetembroidery.com/free_charts.asp
