Determine your GPA.

Calculating your grade point average, or GPA, on a 4.0 scale is as easy as 1-2-3...4.0. Be aware that not all schools use a 4.0 grading scale. This calculation applies to those schools that calculate grades based on the scale where a B-, B and B+ are all worth 3 points. Before calculating your GPA using these instructions, make sure that your school uses the 4.0 scale.

Know the scale. In most schools, regardless of whether its plus or minus, an A equals 4 points, a B equals 3 points, a C equals 2 points and a D equals 1 point. For advanced placement, an A equals 5 points, a B equals 4 points, a C equals 3 points and a D equals 2 points.

    • 2

Add up your grades based on the scale. For instance, if you have 2 A's, 3 B's, and 1 C, then you would have a total of 19. In other words:
      4+4+3+3+3+2 = 19

    • 3

Find the average by dividing your total, 19, by the number of grades you added, which is 6. In this case:
      19/6 = 3.16667 or 3.17

Your GPA with those grades is a 3.17, or a B- average.
