In word processing software, characters refer to the individual inputs that make up the text of a document. Characters are not to be confused with words. While the number of words in a line of text indicates how many words are in the line, the number of characters in a line of text indicates the number of individual characters that compose the line, such as letters, numbers and punctuation marks. If you want to modify the number of characters in a line of text, you can do so via most computer keys.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spaces are considered characters as well.

  • When you input enough characters into a line of text, "enough" depending upon how your page margins are set up, how large your font is and other factors, a new line of text will be created below it.
