How to Hail a Cab in Grand Theft Auto IV

"Grand Theft Auto" games have always been very controversial--some say they encourage crime and violence. The fourth edition aims to make a world that was as realistic and rich as possible. Part of this world includes cabs and cab drivers. The simple solution to your problem may be to simply hijack the cab and drive off, but it's also possible to take a ride in a cab, as a normal person would. First, however, you need to find and hail one.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a new or existing game and play until Nico, your character, is free to roam freely around the city. Switch to unarmed mode and put away any weapons you may be carrying.

    • 2

Find a main stretch of road and wait for a cab to approach. They can be found nearly anywhere in the city, and are the standard cab color (yellow).

    • 3

Press the left bumper on Xbox 360, the L1 button on PS3, or whichever button is usually used to shoot. Nico will whistle, hailing the nearest cab which is currently unoccupied.

    • 4

Press and hold the enter/exit vehicle button (Y on Xbox 306, Triangle on PS3 controllers) when the cab stops. Nico will climb into the back seat and ride in the cab. If you just tap the button, Nico will pull the driver out and drive away in the cab.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't feel like paying the fare, you can always kill the driver afterward. You will pick up more money than you had spent.

  • Cab rides are a boon to missions, as they help you get to the destination faster and more directly than on your own steam, and also help you keep a low profile before and after. They are also a great way to stay off of the LCPD's radar, or lose them altogether.
