Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a rag with plain water. Wipe the rag gently over the scuffed area of the boots to remove loose dirt and dust, and perhaps some of the black mark.

    • 2

Use a pencil eraser to remove as much of the black mark as possible. Gently rub the eraser back and forth over the scuff mark until it has lifted significantly. This may not remove all of the mark, but will surely lighten it.

    • 3

Spread a moderate coating of toothpaste over the black mark. Use plain white toothpaste that does not contain any peroxide or abrasives.

    • 4

Buff the area lightly with an old toothbrush. Avoid scrubbing too hard or the boots may become damaged.

    • 5

Wipe down the area with a rag dampened in plain water. This will remove any toothpaste residue from the boots.

    • 6

Use petroleum jelly as an alternative method for removing black marks from cowboy boots. Apply a moderate amount of petroleum jelly to a clean paper towel. Gently wipe the black mark from the boot with the paper towel and petroleum jelly. Wipe the boot clean with a damp rag.

    • 7

Cover up the scuff mark as a last resort. Use acrylic paint, crayon or felt-tipped marker in a matching color to go over the black mark. This should be used as a last resort because it may be difficult to match the color and will likely have to be reapplied frequently as the color begins to wear off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Non-acetone nail polish remover can also be used to remove black marks from cowboy boots. Use this with caution as it may damage the leather or other material that your boots are made of. Apply the nail polish remover with a clean cloth and test on an inconspicuous area first.
