How to Crochet Oval Tablecloths
Hand-crocheted tablecloths are among the more challenging projects that any crocheter can tackle. An oval tablecloth presents even more of a challenge because of the shaping required to fit it properly. Once you learn to crochet a basic oval shape, though, you'll be able to work out patterns for your own crocheted oval tablecloths.

Make a chain that is half the desired length of your tablecloth.

Double crochet in the ninth chain from the hook. This counts as one filet space. Chain two, skip two chain stitches, double crochet in the next chain stitch. Repeat to the second to last chain in your foundation.

Chain two, double crochet, chain two, double crochet in second to last chain and in last chain. Working along other side of the foundation chain, chain two, double crochet, chain two, double crochet in the next chain stitch. You have now turned around the end of the foundation chain.

Work back along the bottom of the chain in the filet stitch established on the other side, matching double crochets and chain two spaces. When you reach the second to last chain, increase the filets as you did previously.

Work the sides. Make evenly spaced increases around the ends to keep work flat and oval. Join a new ball of thread when needed by knotting the end of the first ball and the beginning of the second ball together and continuing to work. Continue working in rounds in the filet stitch as established until the tablecloth is the desired size.

Work one double crochet in each double crochet and two double crochets in each chain two space around the entire tablecloth, remembering to increase stitches around the ends. Repeat for two more rows.

Work single crochet, chain three, single crochet in first double crochet. Chain one, skip the next double crochet. Repeat the stitches around the tablecloth to make a picot edging. Join the round at the end by slip stitching into the first single crochet.

Break thread and pull it through the last loop. Weave in all loose ends to hide them.

Lay the tablecloth out on a flat, padded surface. Pin it to the desired shape. Lightly steam with an iron to block. Use starch if you want to add a little stiffness.

Start at one end, chain 33 stitches. Work a double crochet in the ninth chain from the hook. This counts as an open filet stitch. Chain two. Skip two chain stitches and double crochet in third chain stitch. Continue to skip two, chain two, double crochet in third chain to the end of the chain. There are now nine open filet meshes made.

Increase four filet stitches at beginning of row as follows: Chain 17. Double crochet in the ninth chain from the hook. Double crochet, chain two, double crochet in third chain twice, chain two, double crochet in double crochet. Do not turn.

Chain two, double crochet in each double crochet to end. Chain two, double crochet in third chain of first filet.

Increase four stitches at end of the row as follows: Work one treble treble crochet in same chain as last double crochet. Chain two. Work one treble treble crochet into post of last treble treble crochet. Work two more treble treble crochet in the same way.

Chain nine. Turn. Work one filet mesh over each filet to end. Work three more rows even on 17 filet mesh stitches.

Continue working as established, increasing four stitches at each end every fifth row. Work even until tablecloth measures half the desired length.

Work the second half of the tablecloth to correspond to the first. Break thread and weave in end. Work a border of chain three picot stitches around the entire tablecloth. Finish as described above.

Tips & Warnings
Alternate filet rows with solid rows for a stripe pattern.
Work filled blocks by making two double crochet in the chain two space. Alternate filled and open blocks for a checkerboard pattern.
