How Do I Play a Casio Keyboard Through the Computer?

Many musicians use their computers as digital recording studios to record demos and other songs at home. When using your computer as a recording device, you can either connect a microphone to your computer and use the microphone to record sounds, or you can plug a musical instrument directly into your computer. If you have a Casio keyboard, you can connect your keyboard to your computer using a MIDI to USB adapter.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off both your computer and your Casio keyboard. You do not want to connect electronic devices while they are on.

    • 2

Plug the MIDI end of the MIDI to USB adapter into your Casio keyboard. On the back of the keyboard, you will see a "MIDI Out" jack. Plug the cable into this jack.

    • 3

Plug the opposite end of the MIDI to USB cable into the USB jack of your computer. This is usually found on the front of most desktop computers and on the sides of most laptop computers.

    • 4

Turn on your computer and allow your computer time to boot. Once the computer has booted turn the volume up about half way on your computer speakers.

    • 5

Turn on your Casio keyboard and turn the volume up slowly until you begin to hear sound coming out of your computer speakers. You can now play your keyboard through your computer speakers. If you want to use your computer to record the keyboard, you will need to launch digital recording software on your keyboard.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have digital recording software on your computer, you can download a free software program called Audacity.
