Install a Cherokee Lift Kit

Installing a lift kit on a Jeep Cherokee is somewhat challenging, especially for the first time. While there are no specialty tools involved in the process, getting the springs in place proves to be very difficult. Set aside at least an entire day for the job, and the whole weekend if you can. Access to air tools can make the task a lot easier because the rear spring bolts tend to fight the entire way.

Things You'll Need

  • Tool set including sockets and end wrenches
  • Spring compressor (optional)
  • Lubricant
  • Jack and stands

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the front coil springs. A small, curved clip on the spring pad retains the front coil springs. You must remove this. Loosen the bolts that secure the upper and lower control arms to the axle and move them out of the way. Disconnect the bottom of the shock as well, to allow the axle some wiggle room. The axle may require some maneuvering, but at this point the springs will come out.

    • 2

Install the new front coil springs. Once the springs get into their place on the coil buckets, twist them around slightly to ensure that they seat well. Replace the factory spring retainers if they will fit over the circumference of the aftermarket springs.

    • 3

Reinstall the bolts for the upper and lower control arms and reattach the shock to the lower mount. Lower the vehicle and turn the wheels from side to side to check that nothing affected clearance. A front-end alignment is recommended after installation of a lift of any size.

    • 4

Steady the rear of the Cherokee using jacks and stands, and remove the rear leaf springs. Four bolts hold it to the rear axle; you will need to remove two eye bolts on either end. Be careful not to damage the brake lines when the springs come out. If some of the bolts are difficult, you can spray them with a penetrating lubricant to aid the process.

    • 5

Install the new rear leaf springs. The new units will bolt up in the exact same factory places, but because they are arched differently, it may take some work to get the rear eye bolts attached. Experiment with different jack heights and shackle positions until the hole in the end of the leaf lines up to the shackle. Slide the bolt through. Tighten it all up and lower the Cherokee.

Inspect everything and address any issues. Sometimes, the front brake lines are not long enough to span the distance of the new lift height, and it will be necessary to replace them. As mentioned, align the Jeep before driving it too far. After driving it for a couple of days, re-torque the rear U-bolts, because they can loosen slightly from vibrations.
