Customizing the desktop screen on your laptop is easy.

The main screen of your PC is the desktop. The desktop, in essence, is your primary workspace. It's home to your taskbar and can host a number of shortcuts to other programs on your computer, allowing you to customize and navigate your PC or laptop with great ease. If your desktop icons go missing or your desktop wallpaper vanishes, restoring them and creating new shortcuts and icons is an easy task that only takes a few minutes. These methods work on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Instructions

  1. Show Hidden Desktop Icons

      Press the Windows Key and the "D" key together to minimize all open programs and show the desktop.

      Right-click anywhere on the desktop.

      Select "View" and click "Show desktop icons" so a check mark appears next to it. Your desktop icons are no longer hidden.

    Creating New Icons

      Browse your computer and find the program you want linked to your desktop. Click the "Start" button on the taskbar, select "All Programs" and find the program on the provided list.

      Right-click the program's icon.

      Select "Send to" and click "Desktop (create shortcut)." A shortcut to the program will appear on your desktop.

    Changing or Restoring Desktop Wallpaper

      Right-click anywhere on the desktop.

      Click "Properties" if you are using Windows XP. Click "Personalize" if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7. Continue to Step 3 if using Windows XP. Continue to Step 4 if using Windows Vista or Windows 7.

      Click the desktop tab if you're using Windows XP. Select the background you want from the provided list, or click the "Browse" button and search your PC for any image you desire. Adjust its position using the "Position" drop-down list. Click "Apply" and then "OK" to complete the process.

      Click the "Desktop background" option in Windows Vista or 7. Select your background from the provided images or click the "Browse" button to search your computer for another image. Click "OK" to complete the process.
