How to Use Your Germinator Greenhouse

The germinator greenhouse kit, made by various manufacturers including Burpee, is a tray divided into eight or 15 sections with a dehydrated soil disk placed in each section. Also inside the tray is a packet of seeds, and the entire package is covered with a clear plastic lid that encloses the planting system and creates a greenhouse environment. The germinator greenhouse comes with various types of seeds, from vegetables to flowers. The kit provides everything needed, besides water, to start the seeds provided or seeds the gardener may already have. Use the germinator greenhouse indoors or outdoors to start plants before it is warm enough to plant them in the ground. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a medium-sized bowl with water and soak the dehydrated soil disks for approximately 15 minutes to rehydrate them. As the disks rehydrate they will expand upward, forming a cylinder-like shape soil plug encased in fine netting.

    • 2

Place the rehydrated soil plugs back in the tray, one plug per square section.

    • 3

Read the back of the seed packet that came with the germinator greenhouse kit and follow any pre-planting directions, such as soaking.

    • 4

Sink one, two or three seeds, depending on how large the seeds are, into each soil plug. Plant the seeds at a depth of one-half inch.

    • 5

Cover the tray with the transparent plastic lid and press on the lid until it snaps into place, ensuring the lid is sealed over the tray.

    • 6

Set the covered tray inside or outside in full sun until the seeds sprout.

    • 7

Let the seedlings grow and then transplant into the garden according to the instructions provided with the seeds. At planting, tear the netting at the bottom of the soil plug so the plant's roots can grow into the ground. Plant the entire soil plug in the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep an eye on the soil rounds in the sealed greenhouse kit and open the greenhouse only to add enough water to keep the soil plugs moist. Keep the germinator greenhouse lid sealed on the tray so the greenhouse environment is not compromised.

  • Don't let the soil disks soak too long during rehydration or they will get soggy and fall apart, even though they are encased in netting.
