How to Turn a Bmp Into an Icon

"Bmp" is the extension abbreviation for a bitmap image. Most image editing software programs support bitmap images, especially those that come pre-installed on most computers. Sometimes, though, you may want to turn a bmp into an icon to use on your instant messenger or online profile. Turn a bmp into an icon with the appropriate converter.

• Icon converter software

Instructions

1. Open the icon converter software. If you don't already have one installed on your computer, several are available online for free.

2. Click "Open" and select the bmp image you wish to turn into an icon from your hard drive.

3. Click "Save As" and name the bmp image with the icon (.ico) extension to turn the bmp into an icon.

Tips & Warnings

• If you bmp isn't already the appropriate size for an icon, resize it to 32 pixels by 32 pixels before saving it as an icon.

• You must have software that supports the icon extension installed on your computer to save a file with that extension.
