The Mitsubishi Mirage is equipped with an automatic transmission, which automatically changes gears as the vehicle moves. Automatic transmission fluid is essential to the efficiency and longevity of the transmission system within your vehicle. The fluid lubricates the gears, making shifting gears seamless, and works to lubricate other components as well. Check the transmission fluid in your Mirage any time you check your regular motor oil.

Step 1

Drive the Mirage for a few minutes, then place the vehicle in park. It's important to check the transmission fluid at operating temperature.

Step 2

Open the front hood of the Mirage. Locate the automatic transmission fluid container and corresponding dipstick. The dipstick is easily distinguishable--it is colored red and reads "ATF" on top. In the Mirage, it is found on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Step 3

Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick completely and remove it once more. Read the transmission fluid level indicated on the dipstick. The ATF fluid is colored bright red, making it easy to read on the dipstick. Note the two lines on the dipstick marked "full" and "add." If the fluid level falls below the "add" line, add transmission fluid immediately to avoid damage to your transmission.

Step 4

Pour the appropriate amount of fluid into the ATF container using a funnel to guide the fluid. Check the ATF levels again; continue to do so until the fluid reaches an acceptable level.
