How to Refill a Lexmark 28
When you use a home printer regularly, you can save money by refilling the ink cartridges instead of constantly buying new ones. If you have a Lexmark printer that takes a number 28 cartridge, you have the choice of using a 28 cartridge or a 28A cartridge. The regular number 28 cartridge cannot be refilled, but the 28A cartridge can.

- Ice pick or paper clip
- 28A ink refill bottle
- Newspaper
- Small syringe
- Tape

Check to find out if you are using a Lexmark 28 cartridge or a 28A. If you are using a 28, it cannot be refilled. If you are using a 28A, remove it from the printer. Place the cartridge on old newspaper to prevent getting ink on your table. You may also want to wear latex gloves while you change the cartridge to prevent staining your hands with ink.

Use an icepick to puncture a small hole in the top of the cartridge. The hole must be at least large enough for a needle to go through. If you do not have an ice pick, you can use the end of a paper clip to make the hole.

Insert the ink into the cartridge by using a small syringe. Draw ink out of the ink bottle with the syringe and insert it through the hole you made in the top of your cartridge. Fill the cartridge by pushing down on the tip of the syringe.

Let the cartridge sit untouched for at least two hours to give the ink time to be absorbed into the cartridge. Place a small piece of clear tape over the hole that you made in the top of the cartridge. Place the cartridge back into the printer and print a test page to make sure that you inserted the ink properly.

Tips & Warnings
When performing your own ink refills, sometimes your printer ink indicator light will say that you have no ink, even though you have refilled. If this happens, you can fool the printer by keeping three old, empty cartridges for use. The printer generally only remembers the last 2 cartridges which were in it.
* Cart #1 (empty) is removed for refilling
* Cart #2 is installed
* Cart #2 is removed
* Cart #3 is installed
* Cart #3 is removed
* Cart #1 (refilled) is installed.
After doing this, your printer ink refill light should be reset.
