How to Set Up Props for a Play

Setting up props (or properties) for a theater production is a job that belongs to the prop master. A prop master's duties include everything from gathering props to ensuring they are readily available to the actors. A prop is defined as any object in a production that is movable (not part of the set) or not worn (costume). As a prop master, you need to be resourceful and as aware of the production as the director and actors.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the script with the director, set designers, costume designers and your crew. Create a master list of all the props that will be needed in the production.

    • 2

Go over the inventory of props on hand and identify what can be used in the production. Discuss with the production crew any unique props that can be made. Make a list of all the props on hand and a list for the props you will need to locate along with possible resources for them.

    • 3

Locate all of the props you don't have on hand. Shop specialty stores, antique shops, flea markets or any other avenues that might produce the props you need.

    • 4

Attend rehearsals to ensure that your props are effective and work for the show. You will also be able to note any new props needed or that have to be changed and ensure the props are available at the next rehearsal.

    • 5

Arrange the areas backstage and in the wings where the props will be held. Monitor that all props have been set in place and are ready when they are needed both onstage and off before each performance.
