How to Find an IP Address Using the Network Address

On a Windows network, the computer name is often referred to as the network address. The computer name is a unique name that can be used to find machines on the network. Another use for the network address is the ability to translate it to an IP address. You can use a network address to translate into an IP address using the "ping" command. The ping command takes a computer name or network address and displays its IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run" or "Start Search" (depending on your version of Windows). Enter "cmd" into the text box and press the "Ok" button. This opens the Windows command prompt, where you can work with the ping statement.

    • 2

Type "ping" into the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. This displays the ping command syntax along with the options available.

    • 3

Enter "ping <computer_name>" into the command prompt. Replace the "<computer_name>" text with the network address for the computer.

    • 4

View the output. The output of the ping command looks like the following:

      Reply from 192.168.1.97: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

The IP address listed after "Reply from" is the IP address for the network address you entered.
