How to Get a Government Rebate for ENERGY STAR Appliances
In early to mid 2010 (depending on the state), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is offering rebates for ENERGY STAR energy efficient appliances. Eligible appliances vary by state and may include refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, heat pump water heaters, solar water heaters, and many more. Click on your state. The Appliance Rebates page displays, informing you of which appliances are eligible for the energy efficiency rebate - for example, gas furnaces, tankless water heaters, room air conditioners, and washing machines.

Underneath the list of eligible appliances, click the Contact link. A page displays with information on what the ENERGY STAR program is about and how to receive the rebate. Some states offer an added incentive to recycle old appliances. Some restrictions apply - for example, in the State of Texas you can only purchase two appliances under the program and two recycling rebates.

How to Receive Your Energy Efficiency Rebate. Homeowners who purchase a qualifying rebate will mail in the form along with the original purchase receipt. Details are available on the state's website. Some state websites also provide homeowners with a list of participating retailers.
Approximately two weeks before the energy efficiency appliance rebate program begins, homeowners can reserve their rebate by calling a toll-free number or registering online. After the reserved mail-in rebates are provided to consumers, any leftover funds will be available to homeowners on a first-come, first-served basis.
