How to Convert Square Yards to Square Feet

You can convert square yards to square feet fairly quickly. A square yard is one measured yard (or three feet) long and one measured yard wide. A square foot is one measured foot long and one measured foot wide. A calculation of square yards may need to be converted to square feet when doing home improvements, etc. You may purchase a large amount of carpet that was sold by the yard, but need to convert it to your measurements that were taken by the foot. 1. To convert the number of square yards to square feet, first define the number of square yards.

2. Multiply the number of square yards by three. For example, if you had 9 square yards, you would multiply the 9 x 3 to get 27.

3. Multiply any fractional amount of yards by 3. For example, if you had 2 ½ yards, you would also multiply the ½ by 3. You can do this with a calculator by putting in 3 x 1, then the division sign, followed by 2. Your answer should be 1 ½ which you would add to the square feet you have already calculated.
