How to Delete Reserved Space on Zune

The Microsoft Zune is an MP3 player that lets users download and play many different types of media files, such as music, videos and games. Sometimes, when attempting to add files to your Zune, you may get an error message that there is only reserved space left on the device. Microsoft reserves a portion of the Zune memory space for operational activities that the device may need to perform in the future. You can safely delete a portion or all of the reserved space on your Zune without affecting its current performance. This will give you more room for music and video files.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your Zune to your computer using the sync cable. Once your computer detects the device the Zune home page will open.

    • 2

Click “Settings” and select “Device.” Click “Reserved Space.”

    • 3

Reset the percentage of space that the device has on reserve. You can choose to delete only a portion of the reserved space or delete all of it. Most users leave at least 1-percent of the reserved space, just to be on the safe side.

    • 4

Save your changes and close the Settings page. Eject and disconnect your Zune from the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • This tutorial applies to all Zune models, including the Zune HD.

  • If you still receive the no space available message after deleting the reserved space, you will need to reboot the Zune so the changes can take effect. Disconnect the Zune from the computer and make sure the Hold switch is in the “Off” position. Hold the “Back” button until the Zune shuts down, wait a few seconds and restart it. You may have to reboot the Zune a couple of times to get it to completely reset.

  • If you find in the future that your Zune is unable to perform a task, like operate a video game, you can always go back in and add more reserved space to your device.
