Internet tethering (also known as Internet sharing) is the process of using your cell phone's Internet service to connect your computer to the Internet, which is useful when there aren’t any wireless networks available. Most mobile service providers, including AT&T Wireless, offer the feature in some form. AT&T Wireless provides a free program called the AT&T Communication Manager to help you manage its network Internet sharing features.

Instructions

    • 1

Install AT&T Communication Manager on your computer from the installation CD provided with your cell phone purchase. If you do not have the CD, you can download the program directly from the AT&T website.

    • 2

Start the AT&T Communication Manager by going to "Start > All Programs > AT&T > AT&T Communication Manager." Connect your AT&T cell phone to your computer using the USB cable provided with your cell phone.

    • 3

Click “Connect” to start Internet tethering. Click “Disconnect” when you are ready to stop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Internet tethering is not a free feature, and AT&T Wireless has several ways it may charge you for it. It’s a good idea to go over your mobile service contract with a customer service representative to anticipate any Internet tethering-related charges on your future bills.

  • Not every AT&T cell phone has Internet sharing capabilities, but many of its smartphones have the feature. Contact AT&T Wireless customer service for more information about whether your cell phone model has Internet sharing features.
