When you remove old pipes, you likely will encounter rust, the result of aging and condensation. Rusty pipes can be difficult to remove, so rather than break the pipe while trying to remove it--which would lead to a more expensive repair--learn how to safely unlock it. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Goggles
  • Penetrating oil
  • Handheld propane torch
  • Pipe wrench
  • 3-foot pipe

Instructions

      Put on your safety goggles.

      Spray penetrating oil around the top and bottom fittings on the rusty pipe.

    • 3

      Turn on the torch. Hold the flame a half-inch away from the pipe. Run the flame around the top and bottom fittings on the pipe for several minutes. This will expand the pipe and break rust free.

      Adjust the pipe wrench to the size of the pipe. Position the pipe wrench in the middle of the pipe. Slide the 3-foot pipe on the end of the pipe wrench handle. The pipe will increase your leverage.

      Pull on the pipe and unscrew it.
