How to Play Custom Maps on 'Call of Duty 4'
The "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" video game allows players to use custom maps and mods to add new challenges and features to multiplayer mode. Connect to multiplayer mode in the "Call of Duty 4" game and go to the list of available servers. This step is no different than if you were connecting to a normal multiplayer game.

Select the menu at the top of the screen and choose "Filter." Look for an option labeled "Mods" and change the setting to "Yes." Mods are any server that has been modified in some way. Custom maps are considered a mod in the game, so any server hosting a custom map will show up when the "Mods" setting is on.
If you want to see a list of both modded and unmodded servers, the original multiplayer servers available with the game, choose "All" instead of "Yes."

Refresh the server list, and all available modded servers should appear. Look at the different modded servers featuring custom maps. Find one that you would like to try out. Make sure it has a large number of players in that server. The game is boring with only a small number of players.

Select the server with the custom map you want to play and join it. A download screen will open and will automatically download the necessary files to play on the modded server. If prompted, tell it to proceed with the download. After the download has finished, the game will restart automatically and load the server you selected. You won't need to select it again when the game restarts.

Tips & Warnings
Other mods besides custom maps are available in different servers. Additional mods provide special features, such as the paint ball mod, which turns players' guns into paintball guns. Join these modded servers the same way you joined the custom map servers.
