How to Remove a Motorcycle Air Box Cover for Performance

The air box cover on your motorcycle has a specific and important function: it keeps out any debris that may damage your engine if it found its way into the air intake system. However, modern air filters have come a long way, and many filters, such as those made by K&N, are strong enough to do this job on their own. If you are running strong air filters, or have routed outboard filters to your motorcycle, you can remove the air box cover to get more air into your engine and more power out of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Use your owner's manual to determine where the air box is set on your motorcycle. All bikes are different, unfortunately, so be sure to check for your specific model.

    • 2

Remove the seat using a socket or combination wrench if your air box is located beneath it. This is the case for most cruiser-style motorcycles as well as some larger street bikes.

    • 3

Remove the side covers using a combination or socket wrench if your air box is located behind them. This is the case for most street bikes and small-engined motorcycles.

    • 4

Use a screwdriver to remove the two or four screws that hold on the air box cover. If your air filter is not held in place inside the air box, use electrical or other strong tape to secure it, so that it does not fall or rattle in the air box without a cover. Some motorcyclists have gone so far as to drill holes in the side of the air box so they may secure the air box with bolts.

Replace the seat or side covers removed previously and take your bike for a test ride. You should feel a slight power boost in the lower rpm range due to increased airflow.
