How to Kill Fungus Spores

Fungi, including molds and mildews, spread by producing tiny spores. Fungal spores develop into fungus when they are in a favorable environment. Fungal growth can damage buildings and objects, and can also cause allergic reactions or asthma episodes in some people. Fungal spores exist almost everywhere, but you can prevent fungal growth by maintaining a low humidity and efficient air movement. Keeping your house clean will also decrease fungus spores. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the current humidity level using a hygrometer, also known as a humidity sensor. If the humidity is above 60 percent, use a dehumidifier to decrease the humidity.

    • 2

Place bags of silica gel in dark or damp places, such as closets or the basement. Silica gel absorbs moisture. Always keep silica gel away from children and pets.

    • 3

Increase ventilation by adding fans. Proper ventilation helps keep your home dry.

    • 4

Remove or repair any sources of moisture, such as leaking roofs, cracked walls, plumbing leaks, water spills or wet clothing.

    • 5

Keep your house very clean. Fungus can survive on tiny amounts of dirt or dust.

    • 6

Clean any existing mold or mildew off hard surfaces with detergent and water. Make sure it dries completely.

    • 7

Throw away any contaminated porous materials, such as ceiling tiles, paper, cardboard or cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always clean up spills or leaks immediately.
