How to Check XBox Live Gamertag Availability
A subscription to Xbox Live requires users to select a gamertag during registration. A gamertag is a unique ID that makes it easy to find friends and vice versa. Your gamertag will be your name to all other users on the service, and it will follow you everywhere you go.

Open your web browser.

Navigate to checkgamertag.com. There is a link in the Resources section.

Enter the name of the gamertag and click "Check." The results will be displayed below the search box.

Turn your console on. Press the "Guide" button on your controller and the "Y" button to go to the Dashboard.

Scroll down to "My Xbox." Select a gamercard and press the "A" button.

Select "Edit Profile." Select "Gamertag." Scroll to "Change Gamertag." Select "Continue."

Enter the gamertag you want to check, and click "Check." If it's available, you will be presented with the option of buying that gamertag.
