How to Dress Like a Disney Princess for Halloween

At Halloween, some children find scary costumes too frightening. If you have a little girl, dressing her up as a Disney princess might be a better option. With the right fabric colors and a few supplies, you can make your own princess costume. If you struggle with sewing, iron-on stitching might be a better option. Choose a fabric color that matches the gown of the Disney princess your daughter likes the most---for example, soft blue is the color of Cinderella’s dress and pink is the gown color of Sleeping Beauty.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a plain silk dress or nightgown in the same color as the princess’s gown you have chosen. It should be floor-length and have the proper sleeve length. Have your child model the gown. Adjust the hem length with pins.

    • 2

Heat up the iron to be warm or hot. Place the iron-on stitching tape between the fabric hem you have made. Then iron it in place, removing the pins as you go. Allow the garment to cool a few minutes before handling it.

    • 3

Tack tulle to the waist of the gown with pins. The tulle should drape, bunting style, about 6 inches down. (Bunting style is gathering the fabric into a swag and tacking it up, letting it drape down a few inches, then tacking it up again.) Do this around the entire waist. There will be three or four tulle buntings around the waist. Tack the tulle up with pins. Then remove the pins one at a time and attach the tulle with hot glue. Use sharp scissors to cut away the excess tulle.

Attach ruffles to the underside of the hem of the garment. The ruffles should peek out from the bottom of the dress. Iron the ruffles into place by using the iron-on stitching tape. Place the tape between the ruffles and the fabric and press it down with a hot iron.

    • 5

Add ruffles to the neckline or to the hems of the sleeves for an extra decorative touch. Use the iron-on tape to attach the ruffles.

    • 6

Put the gown on the child. Tie the ribbon around her waist. Tie the bow in the back of the dress.

    • 7

Remember the crown to complete the princess look.
