How to Arrange Third Grade Classrooms
Arranging a third grade classroom is an important consideration. The flow and organization of the room can make a big difference in the productivity of the students. A classroom that flows well allows third grade students to move easily around the space. Because they are more independent in their work than younger students, third grade students need easy access to the educational tools and resources that help them complete their work.

1
Measure all areas of the classroom with a tape measure. Use these measurements to design your classroom layout.
-
2
Write a list of the functional areas and furniture you need in the classroom. A third grade classroom will typically include student desks, a teacher desk, computer stations, a classroom library, a group work area and storage for learning tools and resources.
-
-
3
Determine how much space you will need for each area of the classroom. This gives you an idea of where to place each item.
-
4
Make a scale drawing of the third grade classroom on grid paper. Sketch in each of the classroom components as you decide on a location.
-
5
Choose a layout for the students' desks. The students spend a significant amount of time at their seats, so an effective layout is key. Consider your style of teaching. Many third grade projects include group work, so small groupings of desks work well. You can also place the desks in rows or a U shape.
-
6
Identify the location for the student computer centers. Keep in mind the placement of electrical outlets in the room to avoid the need for extension cords.
-
7
Fill in the locations of the other items and functional areas, including the teacher's desk and group work areas. Place the items so the students can easily access them.
-
8
Arrange all of the furniture in the classroom according to the floor plan you created. Do a walk-through to test how well the room flows. Pretend you are a student to get an idea of how students will use the room. Make adjustments to the room arrangement as needed.
