How to Train Your Dog in a Kennel

Training your dog in a kennel is an effective way to housebreak your dog and to prevent destructive behavior, such as chewing. It also keeps them safe from potential hazards when you are not at home, such as electrical cords. Kennel training is also helpful when traveling, as your dog will not be anxious when traveling in her crate. Kennel training is also relatively simple to do.

Help your puppy to get accustomed to the crate. For the first few days, have the crate open and allow the dog to go in and out freely. When they seem to be comfortable with the crate, or going in and out of the crate without being fearful, you can begin to shut them into the kennel for short amounts of time.

Furnish your puppy's kennel. Depending on your schedule, your dog may be in a kennel for several hours. Make sure that there are toys that your dog will be entertained by and that will keep them busy while they are waiting for you. Make sure toys are not small choking hazards and that there are no loose pieces that the dog can choke on. You can also add a blanket or towel for your puppy.

Let your dog out to eliminate several times during the day. For puppies up to 9 weeks, only 30 minutes of crate time is recommended. Make sure to take her out several times so that she associates being out with needing to eliminate and views the inside of her home as a place not to eliminate.

Refrain from using the kennel as a form of punishment. It is merely a training tool to help you form your dog's training. Keep the kennel in a public part of your home so your pup can be part of your family.
