How to Replace the Heater Blower Motor on a 1994 Ford Ranger

Replacing the heater blower motor in your Ford Ranger can improve the efficiency of the heating and cooling system in your truck. The blower motor resides in the air duct on the engine compartment side of the firewall and is responsible for pushing air through the heater core or the A/C evaporator core to provide heated or cooled air in the cab of your truck. The blower motor is available from the dealer or an auto parts store as new replacement units or from some salvage yards as a used part.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench. Set the cable aside for now and isolate it from the battery while you are working.

    • 2

Locate the blower motor on the passenger side firewall near the fender and inner wheel well of the truck. The blower motor is a round, cylindrical motor sticking out of the firewall with a wiring harness connector on the back.

    • 3

Disconnect the wiring harness connector on the back of the motor by squeezing the tab on the connector and pulling it straight out. Do not pull on the wires when removing the plug. Damage to the wires can occur from pulling on them.

    • 4

Locate and remove the three mounting bolts from the mounting flange on the motor using a socket and ratchet. Pull the blower motor out of the housing using care not to damage the cage fan on the motor.

    • 5

Install the new blower motor into the air duct or blower housing and install the three mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts using a socket and ratchet. Keep in mind that the bolts thread into metal clips and overtightening the bolts will break the clips.

    • 6

Plug the wiring harness connector into the blower motor, making sure it locks into place. Reconnect the negative battery cable on the negative terminal of the battery and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench.

    • 7

Test the blower motor by turning the ignition switch to the on position and turn on the blower motor switch on the dash.
