How to Install an LED Rocker Switch

In many cases, auto accessories like driving lights or rear window defoggers, require a power source, so you will need to install a power switch to turn the accessory on and off. Many people prefer installing LED rocker switches for these applications, so when the accessory is turned on the switch lights up, which verifies the item is on.

Instructions

  1. Installing Rocker Switch

    • 1

First you will need to determine were the switch is to be mounted. It will need to be accessible, but not interfere with anything else.

    • 2

Once you have located the area, you will need to drill a hole to mount the switch. The hole size will dependi on what size switch you have chosen. Switch panels are available that give you more options for mounting.

    • 3

Mount the switch in the hole.

    Wire the switch

    • 4

      Disconnect the battery.

    • 5

Find the three terminals on the back of the switch. One is the ground. Another is the power in (it is recommend that you use an inline fuse for this wire). The third is the power out to the accessory.

    • 6

Strip approximately 1/4 inch of insulation off each of the wires, using the wire strippers, that you will use to connect to the switch.

    • 7

Crimp the terminals, using the wire crimpers, to each of the wires. Make sure that the terminal ends match the switch terminal. Normally the switch ends are male, so you will need the female ends for the wires.
With the ground wire you will need to locate a good ground, and attach the other end of the ground wire to the source. You can test the ground with a test light.

    • 8

Connect the wires to the back of the switch--there will be a diagram on the switch that indicates were each of the wires go.The (+) indicates the power input, the (-) the ground, and (acc) the accessory.

    • 9

Reconnect the battery and test the switch. The LED light should light up and the accessory should work.

Tips & Warnings

  • When locating a solid ground, it has been my experience to locate a bolt as a source to avoid drilling more holes.

  • Make sure to disconnect the battery before performing these steps to avoid shorts.
