How to Create Ebooks With Sound
Creating e-books with sound is simple with the right tools. You don't have to be an expert but you do need specific software. Multimedia e-books give you the cutting edge against other e-books that have similar content without sound because they give your audience the convenience of listening to your e-book with an MP3 player or other handheld device instead of having to use a PC. Multimedia e-books give tutorials, interviews and lectures more impact and are great for kids.

Instructions

-
1
Obtain a registered Activ E-Book compiler, which is software that takes source files, the content of your e-book and compiles them into an easily distributable format.
-
2
Obtain an advanced multimedia extension add-on for the Activ E-Book compiler, which allows you to incorporate multimedia elements in your e-books from standard windows file formats that you create using sound, MIDI or video editing or recording programs and supports the following: wave audio sound files, MIDI music files, video files, CD audio and control over Microsoft MCI-compatible multimedia devices.
-
-
3
Using the Activ script and the active links in the e-book compiler, create HTML codes to access audio files and download them into the e-book compiler adding them to the source files that compromise your e-book's content.
-
4
Choose how you will use sound in your e-book, either having audio in the background from audio samples or MIDI files, or using a narrator, or interjecting sporadic audio clips where appropriate to enhance the text by using the active text or active links in the advanced multimedia extension add-on incorporated in your e-book compiler.
-
5
Distribute your multimedia e-book on a CD-ROM or ZIP disk so that your audience can run the books directly from a CD-ROM or ZIP and access and link the external audio MICI files, which can be used on drives D:, E:, F:, and so forth.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure that your e-book compiler is royalty free software or you could end up having to pay royalties on your multimedia e-book.
For large multimedia books, use smaller files because larger files are harder and take more time for your audience to download.
Advanced multimedia extension software does not supply compression/decompression software for compressed multimedia file formats so you will need to obtain MCI-compatible "codecs" for formats you choose from another source. Microsoft usually has standard codecs installed, but it is your responsibility to check the license agreement for any such "codec" software for terms of use.
