How to Change to Native Mode on a Windows 2000 Server

From corporate to academic institutions, Windows 2000 servers manage a variety of computer networks, also known as domains. The operating system's domains have two modes: native and mixed. When the operating system's server is configured to native mode, only Windows 2000-based domain controllers can access the network related to that specific server. Native mode allows you to set up and use universal groups, which can be nested inside of each other. This allows a greater number of users on one domain.

      Open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Active Directory Domains console by entering "dsa.msc /server=XXX.XXX" at a command prompt. Press the "Enter" or "Return" key on your computer's keyboard. The "XXX"s represents the server and domain number for your specific Windows 2000 server. Do not enter the quotation marks.

      To get to a command prompt, click "Start," "Run." Enter "cmd" in the box next to the word "Open:." Press the "Enter" or "Return" key.

      Right-click the domain you want to change to native mode. Select "Properties."

      Click the "General" tab.

      Click "Change Mode" under the heading "Change domain mode." You will be warned that the domain changing process cannot be undone.

      Click "Yes" when prompted.

      Click "Apply." Your Windows 2000 server will pause. An "Active Directory Service" dialog box will appear stating the operation completed successfully.

      Click "OK." Your Windows 2000 server will reboot.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the Windows 2000 server reboots, it may take 15 minutes or longer for the server to return to a working state.

  • You can also access the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Active Directory Domains console by clicking on the console's shortcut, if you have one on your computer.
