How to Clean Black Plexi Glass
Plexiglass has a wide variety of useful applications, everything from transporting fine art to automobile detailing. Plexiglass is virtually unbreakable, and any cracks it sustains can usually be buffed out. Because it is a plastic, static electricity can compromise its resistance to dust and dirt. Dust and dirt particles will scratch the surface of plexiglass, as will almost any piece of fabric or paper towels. Cleaning black plexiglass requires little more than soft cloths and a mild detergent solution. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Warm water
- Dish detergent
- Microfiber cloth (for dusting)
- Chamois
- Naptha or kerosene
- Can of compressed air
Instructions
-
-
1
Blow off dust and dirt before washing. A can of compressed air works well.
-
2
Perform routine washings with a warm soap-and-water solution. Dish soap works well because it has degreasing properties.
-
-
3
Blot the plexiglass dry, rather than wiping it dry. Use a clean soft cloth or a chamois.
-
4
Use naptha or kerosene to remove dried-on adhesives like masking tape. These products also can successfully remove tar, grease or paint. Apply a small amount to a clean soft cloth and gently wipe away the adhesive grime. Wash with a soap-and-water solution to remove any residue and dry with another clean soft cloth.
-
5
Dust regularly with a microfiber cloth.
-
6
Apply an antistatic coating to prevent the plexiglass from attracting dust and debris. Wipe on the first coat with a clean soft cloth and allow it to dry before applying a second coat. Apply a small amount at a time and remove any excess with another cloth. These coatings are especially helpful if the black plexiglass spends a lot of its time indoors. Plexiglass exposed to rain and moisture is less likely to hold a static electric charge.

Tips & Warnings
Never use traditional window cleaners. These products contain ammonia, which will damage the plexiglass.
