How to to Install a Scope On a Rifle

A good rifle scope may not guarantee your accuracy during shooting, unless the rifle scope is perfectly installed and zeroed on your rifle. Before you zero a rifle scope, you have to mount it onto your rifle properly, otherwise all your further efforts will be futile. This article is going to show you how to install a scope on a rifle.

Instructions

    • 1

To install a scope on a rifle, you need to install the scope mount first. At this step, you just want to install the lower bracket only. You fasten the screw and make sure they are only 70-80% tight since you may need to adjust its position slightly later.

    • 2

Get the scope and put it on top of the scope mount (the installed lower bracket). Adjust the scope so that the eyepiece lens is approximately 2''-3''away from your aiming eye. What you want is a bright and full view in the rifle scope. Make sure you install the rifle scope in the correct orientation with the windage on right and the elevation on top. The Windage is used to adjust the crosshairs in right and left direction, and the elevation is used to adjust the crosshairs in up and down direction.

    • 3

The next step is to install the upper bracket on top of the rifle scope. You want to tighten the screw somewhat but not 100% tight so that you still can rotate the rifle scope with your hands.

    • 4

Rotate the rifle scope until its vertical crosshair aligns with the rifle perfectly. When you do this alignment, you need to hold the rifle on your shoulder and open both of your eyes.

    • 5

After aligning the vertical crosshair, you need to fasten the screws on lower bracket and make sure they are 100% tight.

    • 6

The last step is to tighten the upper bracket, which is the critical part. You want the pressure evenly distributed on the rifle scope so you have to fasten the screws in the correct order. Fasten the first screw 80% tight and then repeat with the screw diagonally opposite the first screw. After you finish tightening all the screws 80% tight, tighten them again to 100% tight in the same order as you did previously. Ok, now you've learned how to install a scope on a rifle. But before you use it, you have to zero the rifle scope. The following article will show you how to zero a scope on a rifle.
