How to Configure a Linksys Router to a 2Wire Verizon Router

Verizon offers a number of different broadband packages for home, school or office. Many of their installations also come with equipment, including 2Wire routers. Most of the 2Wire routers come with built in wireless. If you have a lower end router that does not have wireless built in, such as the 2Wire 2071, you will need to purchase a separate wireless router, such as one made by Linksys.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set the Linksys router up near the 2Wire router. Allow about an inch on each side for ventilation. The Linksys also requires an electrical outlet for operation. Plug the electrical adapter into the socket and the other end into your Linksys. Do not power it up yet.

    • 2

Disconnect your computer from the 2Wire router. Power down the 2Wire router. If connected through Ethernet, unplug the cable from the back of your computer and the other end from the 2Wire. If this is connected through USB, be sure to do a "Safe Disconnect" before you unplug the USB cable.

    • 3

Connect the Linksys to the 2Wire. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back of the 2Wire. This is usually colored yellow on most 2Wire models. Plug the other end into the "WAN" port on the Linksys.

    • 4

Power up the 2Wire and allow it to reconnect to your Verizon provider. The green indicator light on the front of the router will glow a steady green when it is up and connected.

    • 5

Power up the Linksys router. Allow it to connect to the 2Wire. Don't be alarmed if the "WAN" light is not turning on yet, there is still some configuration needed.

    • 6

Connect a computer or laptop to one of the LAN ports on the back of the Linksys with an Ethernet cable. These are located next to the WAN port you connected to in Step 3.

    • 7

Open up a Web browser and navigate to the address http://192.168.1.1. This is the default address for Linksys routers. Login with the user name "admin" and password "password" (no quotes). You can also find this password and user name in your user guide.

    • 8

Click on the "Internet Wizard" to configure your router. You may be prompted for your Verizon user name and password, so make sure you have these handy. Click "OK" when finished.

    • 9

Click "Wireless Configuration" on the main menu. Here you can set the network SSID (network name) and password for your router. If you can't think of a password, the router can generate one for you. Close the "Wireless Configuration" menu when finished and log out of the Linksys.

    • 10

Test your wireless network with a wireless enabled device. You will need to enter the network name and password from Step 9 when prompted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the routers don't seem to connect, power them down, wait a minute, then turn them on again.

  • Use caution when making any configuration changes to your router, as this may cause the router to become inoperable. Most Linksys routers allow you to create a backup configuration file.
