How Do I Get D Drive Back on Computer?

On rare occasions after a computer crashes, you will find that your D: drive, which is most commonly associated with a CD drive, cannot be found inside of your Windows operating system. While this can be cause for alarm, know that remedying this issue is a relatively simple process that only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Restoring D: Drive

      Open your "Start" menu and click the "Run..." button. In Windows Vista, this option can be found under the "Accessories" tab in the "All Programs" menu listing.

      Type "regedit" into the "Run..." box and press the "Enter" key, which brings up a new window titled "Registry Editor."

      Locate the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" registry folder in the left-hand sidebar.

      Delete both the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" options.

      Exit out of the Registry Editor and restart your computer. Upon reboot, open "My Computer" to see if the process has worked.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some may not see an "UpperFilters" option. If this is not there, proceed with the "LowerFilters" deletion.

  • If all your drives are still registering but with different letters, you can manually change the letter of your drive through your Computer Management window.
