How to Untangle Matted Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can add instant volume, layers, dimension and length to your hair. Although they can be pricey, many people are willing to spend the money to get some extra locks in their 'do. Natural human hair extensions do not pose too many problems. They can be color treated, styled and washed just like your natural hair. Synthetic hair extensions, however, cannot be treated just like your natural hair. Because of this, the synthetic hair can get matted and tangled easily (kind of like your Barbie's hair used to). Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Take a shower as usual. When washing your hair, make sure not to massage the shampoo and conditioner in. This can cause more tangles.

    • 2

Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair and the extensions. Leave the conditioner in for several minutes. With the conditioner still in, comb through your hair with your fingers. Try and loosen as many of the knots as you can.

    • 3

Rinse out the conditioner. Do not towel dry your hair when you get out of the shower; again this can cause more tangles.

    • 4

Spray the untangling spray into your hair. This will not make your hair greasy or oily, so spray in as much as you think you'll need to get the tangles out. This spray is normally found in the baby-care sections of drug stores.

    • 5

Take your wide-toothed comb (this will do less damage than a regular comb or brush), and begin combing through your hair. Start at the very ends of your hair, working out the tangles. Once the tangles are combed through, begin working your way up to the top of your head. This may take a while if the extensions are severely matted.

    • 6

Blow your hair dry when you have gotten all of the tangles out. Dry your hair in sections using a paddle brush. The paddle brush will help straighten your hair without adding any more knots.
