How to Make a Clown Costume for a Toddler
Whether you are looking for a costume for a performance at daycare, for Halloween, or just for playing dress up, a clown costume for your toddler is an easy costume to make. Making your own costume is much cheaper than purchasing one at costume store. 1
Locate silly clothes. If your toddler has brightly colored clothes with stripes, polka dots and plaids, use these. If not, look at thrift stores and on clearance racks at the department stores. Or ask friends and neighbors if they have clothes you can borrow. In a pinch, you can dye or spray paint clothes. Mix and match the clothes, using different patterns and colors that you would not normally put together.

2
Layer the clothing. For example, place a short sleeved shirt over a long sleeved shirt and shorts over long pants. Use suspenders in bright colors and knee-high mismatched socks pulled over your toddler’s pants.

Mismatch the shoes. Wear different shoes on each foot. If you prefer, you can purchase over-sized plastic clown shoes from a costume shop; however, these can be difficult to walk in and your toddler may fall down.

Fix your toddler's hair into a clown do. If you have a colored clown wig or want to purchase one from a costume shop, you can use that. Otherwise, spike up your child’s hair or put it into three or four pig-tails around her head. Then use different colored hair sprays to color her hair. These are temporary and will wash out when you bathe your toddler later on.

5
Paint your toddler's face. There are many ways you can do clown makeup. You can paint his entire face white and then add a large red mouth and red cheeks, like a traditional clown. Or you can use any type of makeup style you wish. If you don’t want to use a big red plush nose with your toddler, use some red makeup to the tip of his nose. If you do not want to use costume makeup, you can use regular make up to decorate his face.
