How to Get Earbuds to Stay in Your Ear

Some people are fortunate to have ears that easily fit ear buds. If you are not so fortunate, you may struggle with ear buds that repeatedly fall out of your ears as you try to listen to a portable audio device. Because the size of ear canals vary, not every ear bud will fit every ear properly. With effort; however, you should be able to find ear buds specially designed to fit a range of ears. Once you find an ear bud that works for your size ear canal, you should be able to get ear buds to stay in your ears.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase adjustable ear buds. Some ear buds adjust when you insert them into your ear canal by turning a small knob on the outside end of the ear bud. As you turn the knob, the inner portion of the ear bud adjusts to fit your ear canal tightly. This helps prevent the ear buds from falling out of your ears. See the first resource for an example of an adjustable ear bud.

Choose ear buds with different seals for different sized ear canals. Because ear canals differ in size, ear buds will not seal the same in all ears. If you choose ear buds with small, medium and large seals, you can use the small seals if you have small ear canals and the larger seals if your ear canals are larger. Experiment with the different seals to find the seal that fits your ears properly and comfortably. See the second resource for an example of ear buds with adjustable seals.

Find ear buds designed specifically for people with small ear canals. It is often people with small ear canals that have the most difficulty fitting ear buds into their ears. You may find these ear buds marketed especially for children, but if they fit your ears as an adult, they are suitable for your use as well. If you use ear buds with a smaller internal size, they will fit more easily into your ear canal and stay inserted more reliably. See the third resource for some smaller ear buds.

Fit the ear bud with smallest seal (if applicable) and insert the right ear bud into the right ear and the left ear bud into the left ear. Hold an ear bud with the wire so it points up as you hold the ear bud at your ear canal. Insert the ear bud into your ear canal, working it in gently until it feels snug. If the seal size feels too small, choose a larger size.
