How to Build Giant Beach Sand Castles

Building sandcastles is a great way to enjoy time spent at the beach. Sandcastles come in as many shapes and sizes as you can imagine, and you don't need any special tools to make these shoreline chateaus as big as they can be. With just your hands, some water from the ocean and some creativity, you can make impressive and sturdy sand towers and embellishments.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole deep enough to hit the water table; if the water table is too deep, fill a large bucket with water. Water is the glue that holds a sand castle together, and you will need a source of water throughout the building process.

    • 2

Form the sand that you dug out of the hole into a compacted mound.

    • 3

Use both hands to scoop out a large clump of wet sand from the bottom of the hole you dug.

    • 4

Place the scoop of sand on top of the compacted mound of sand that came from the hole you dug, moving quickly so that the sand stays wet. Form the scoop of sand into a round, flat, wide shape.

    • 5

Keep scooping out sand and placing the scoops on top of each other until you've reached your desired height. As you place each scoop, flatten it out and mold it into the sand below it, creating a sturdy tower.

    • 6

Create a wall by scooping out clumps of sand from the hole and forming them into rectangular bricks with your hands. Lay the bricks end to end until you've reached your desired length, then begin layering them on top of each other until you've reached your desired height.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can carve tunnels, archways and stairways out of your sand wall or create additional towers to attach to your existing one.
