How to Calculate Stringer

Stringers are the sloped backs to a stairway that support the steps and keep them in place and from shifting. At first glance, calculating the length of a stringer seems to be a daunting and complicated task. In reality, it uses the Pythagorean theorem (A squared plus B squared = C squared) to determine how long the stringer should be to properly support the steps and allow for a sturdy stairway. It is important that you know how to do square roots on your calculator, as this is an important step in stringer calculation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the stair riser of a step and multiply this number by itself. This is also called "squaring" a number.

    • 2

Measure the stair tread of a step, and again multiply this number by itself.

    • 3

Add the two resulting numbers together. Take the square root of the resulting number, and you will have the length of the stringer necessary for one step. The square root button will look similar to a check sign on your calculator.

    • 4

Multiply the stringer length for one step by the total number of steps, and you will determine the length of the stringer.
